General Dog Training FAQs
Is home dog training better than group classes?
For most behavioural issues, yes. Dogs behave differently at home than they do in a group situation. Dog training at home addresses the real triggers and the environment where problems occur.
When should I start training my puppy?
Start immediately. Training can begin as soon as your puppy arrives home, usually from 8 weeks of age.
How long does it take to train a dog?
It depends on the behaviour and consistency at home. Some issues improve in one session. More complex behaviours may take several follow-ups and ongoing reinforcement.
Can older dogs still be trained?
Yes. Age is not a barrier. Clear communication and consistency matter more than age.
What is the best dog training method?
The best method is one that is clear, consistent, and easy for owners to apply daily. Effective training focuses on communication, timing, and leadership rather than treats alone.
Do dog trainers in New Zealand use positive reinforcement?
Most modern trainers incorporate reward-based principles. However, successful behaviour change also requires clear boundaries and consistent consequences.
How much does dog training cost in New Zealand?
Costs vary. Group classes may charge per course. Private trainers often charge per session or offer support programs with upfront pricing.
Is online dog training effective?
Online advice can help with basic obedience, but serious behavioural issues are best addressed in person, especially aggression or anxiety.
How do I stop my dog from barking excessively?
First, identify the cause: boredom, anxiety, territorial behaviour, or attention-seeking. Then apply consistent corrections and teach calm alternatives.
Can separation anxiety be fixed?
Yes, in many cases it can be significantly reduced or resolved with structured training and gradual desensitisation.
Can dog training help with aggressive behaviour?
Yes, but aggression should be assessed early. Professional in-home training is strongly recommended for safety and effective management.
Why does my dog ignore me outside?
Distractions are stronger outdoors. Training should be developed gradually with increasing levels of distraction.
Are group classes good for socialisation?
They can help with controlled exposure. However, proper socialisation is about calm, positive experiences, not just interaction with other dogs.
What should I look for in a dog trainer in New Zealand?
Look for:
- Experience
- Verified reviews
- Clear pricing
- A structured training system
- Ongoing support options
Is it worth hiring a professional dog trainer?
If behaviour is causing stress, safety concerns, or conflict at home, professional guidance can save time and prevent problems from escalating.
